Welcome to our website!

We are YOUvA Today, the student newspaper of the UvA. By students, for students. Here you’ll read about all things related to you as an UvA-student: our cultural hub CREA, our USC sport facilities, student politics, interviews with UvA-Alumni and much more! Our goal is to publish honest and critical news. The UvA has many different buildings and faculties, we want to highlight what makes us a community. Our team consists of enthusiastic students who are completely new to the field and more experienced journalists. Everything is made by students, except for the website and the graphic design. We thank the lovely team of Mark It Zero for this, who remain students at heart. This is the right place to get your daily dose of student news!

The founders

Audrey de Ridder (She/Her)

Audrey de Ridder (She/Her)

Hey! My name is Audrey, I’m the editor of sports and opinion for YOUvA Today and from time to time I like to write as well. On top of that, I'm the head of socials! I studied communication science and am now studying journalism. I’m broadly interested in all things journalism, but as of right now I'm working in sports journalism. As one would expect from a student living in Amsterdam (and of someone with a decent set of brains) I support Ajax. I also play football myself (kind of like David Neres, but a lot worse). Together with Arthur and Babette I’ve been there since the start of YOUvA Today and I can’t wait to keep improving our newspaper. Stay tuned, I promise there’s a lot more coming!

Babette Stolk (She/Her)

Babette Stolk (She/Her)

My name is Babette and I'm the editor in chief as well as the editor of politics and arts. Apart from being clumsy and a bit old-fashioned (I'm often referred to as a grandma), I'm very interested in politics, journalism and literature. It should come as no surprise that I study English literature and Political Science, but trust me, I'm capable of talking about other things as well. If you are into passionate debates, tea or books, let's make sure to have a chat (or very intense conversation, if that is something you fancy). Look out for the girl in a dress, dropping a mug while passionately talking, that is probably me.

Arthur Vacca

Arthur Vacca

Hi there! I'm Arthur, a fourth-year Political science student, and aspiring journalist. As editor of the Alumni & Today sections of our UvA newspaper, I'm always on top of student-related news. Besides this, I'm a fervent lover of science fiction movies, documentaries about those movies, and typical Dutch songs called ‘meezingers’ (my music taste has often been described as primitive, but I remain a proud Gerard Joling fan). With this newspaper, I hope to bring the different faculties of the UvA closer together and create a community feeling severely absent at this moment. If you are aware of something interesting that happened on campus, or would just like a friendly chat, do not hesitate and hit me up!

Authors

Maria Wojewoda (She/Her)

Maria Wojewoda (She/Her)

Hi everyone! My name is Maria and I'm a first-year Political Science student. You can find my articles (not surprisingly) in the politics section. I love reading, exploring new places and obviously, writing. "I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means”- those words from my all-time favourite writer Joan Didion perfectly explain why I have decided to gain experience in writing. I am super excited to have joined YOUvA and I hope you will enjoy reading our pieces!

Lea Shamaa (She/Her)

Lea Shamaa (She/Her)

Hey! I'm an avid writer from Lebanon, born in the US, who's lived their entire life in Abu Dhabi. I'm a third-year media and information student at the UvA. The articles I write are critical about culture and society, which you can find in YOUvA Today's 'opinion' section. I joined this student newspaper to tell stories about the cultural atmosphere at the UvA. Being here, I can share my thoughts about student life and raise awareness about things I find important. If I'm not writing, you can find me at the skatepark or at home, filling my time with pretty much anything that gets my mind going. Happy reading!

Isaac Domínguez Bosch

Isaac Domínguez Bosch

My name is Isaac and I'm a first-year Communication Science student. I was raised in a tiny town in the middle of the mountains for my whole life , so living in Amsterdam is very exciting! In the future I would like to be a sports reporter. I'm very excited to collaborate and learn from fellow students in the YOUvA team. I'm passionate about all sports, but mostly watch tennis and football. Life is uncertain, but the only thing I know for sure is that Barça is the best team in the world. Força Barça!

Sebastiaan Nijland (He/Him)

Sebastiaan Nijland (He/Him)

Greetings and salutations! My name is Sebastiaan Nijland. I’m 23 years old and born in Nijmegen. But I've been
living in Amsterdam for most of my life. I study History at the UvA. In my free time I like to keep active, read, cook, visit galleries, and watch everything related to Anthony Bourdain, Sofia Coppola, and Guy Ritchie. I will be working as a politics writer here at YOUvAToday, uncovering the wonders of the world of student politics hidden behind the doors of the Maagdenhuis. If you're ever down for a chat or have an interesting piece of information for an article, don’t hesitate to contact me and we’ll meet for a coffee!

Menelaos Tsikaras

Menelaos Tsikaras

Hello people of the world! My name is Menelaos Tsikaras coming from Thessaloniki, Greece. I study Political Science at the UvA, whilst my free time is composed of politics, cinema, and books. Joining the team of YOUvA Today gives me another incentive to cooperate with nice and creative people in trying to contribute to our university community. If you're aware of any affairs/events happening in the future, don't hesitate and hit me up. Don't feel ashamed of yourself if you don't manage to pronounce my name properly, it's totally fine. We will work on that!

Mara Georgescu (She/Her)

Mara Georgescu (She/Her)

Hello there! I’m Mara, a first-year Literary and Cultural Analysis student, and first-time writer. You can find my articles in the Arts section sharing my entirely unbiased and completely objective opinions. I’m excited to have an extra excuse to go to any and all on-campus and off-campus shows, art installations, exhibitions, or whatever else might be interesting to look at from an artistic perspective. Like most of the staff here at YOUvA, I have many opinions I’m always ready to share and debate at a moment’s notice, so if you agree or disagree with anything I write I’m always up to have a coffee -or a beer- and a chat.

Stella Nebois (She/Her)

Stella Nebois (She/Her)

Scream in the middle of the street 'Reggae, Jazz and coffee' and I shall get out of the depths of my mind filled with books, random thoughts about humanity (and pretty much anything) to say hi. I study Literary Arts and Cultural Analysis. My goal is to work as a writer, working in projects to bring awareness on topics such as inclusion and the powerful energy of the arts, but also developing my own work, such as poetry.

Patrick van Oosterom

Patrick van Oosterom

Hi everyone! My name is Patrick and I’m a reporter for the Today section of YOUvA Today. I’m an English student at Utrecht University, but this year I’m doing two minors in Journalism and Political Science at the UvA. You’ll probably see me on campus at some point, interviewing strangers and passersby, which is something that I, being a Leo, truly enjoy. Furthermore, you’ll likely see me writing/talking about sustainability and environmentalism at some point, so buckle up, grab a cuppa coffee, and enjoy the ride!

Sibylle Loock (She/Her)

Sibylle Loock (She/Her)

Hello everyone! I’m Sibylle, 21 years old and from Germany. Currently, I’m in my third year of Political Science Bachelor. For YOUvA Today, I write articles concerning the political section (not very surprising due to my study). I am very interested in journalism, especially when it is political and able to make life a little better for everyone. Last year, I specialized in Political Theory, which discusses political philosophy and why things are the way they are (my absolute favorite course). For my last high school years, I lived in Sweden, so if you ever want to take a Fika and tell me about your perspective on life, hit me up. I hope everyone enjoys this newspaper as much as we do!

Hugo Botman

Hugo Botman

Hi! My name is Hugo and I will be the editor of YOUvA Today. I’m a law student, currently doing a masters in commercial law. I’ve spent most of my student years writing for, editing and overseeing the faculty magazine of the law faculty association, and I am now moving to a broader audience. While I spent a lot of my time on the athletics track, I can also be found in the ArenA, cheering on the Godenzonen of Ajax.

Smrithika Majukar (She/Her)

Smrithika Majukar (She/Her)

Hello, I’m Smrithika (or Smithy), and I’m the social media manager for YOUvA Today! I study English literature and enjoy reading, writing and occasionally crying about how well some people write. If you find a girl reading a novel (probably written by Margaret Atwood) or carrying too many filled tote bags for her own good, chances are you have spotted me. I’m excited to bring the spellbinding work of the lovely journalists at YOUvA to your phones / laptops / devices (in a non-creepy way, of course), because what’s better than hearing about students from the students themselves!

Photographers

Lara Strauch

Lara Strauch

Hi! My name is Lara. I study Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. I'm born and raised in Germany and left in order to experience a diversity of people and cultures. All my life, I've loved to take photos, which lead me to join the YOUvA-Team as a photographer. Besides my love for photography, I enjoy doing sports and I like exploring my new home turf, Amsterdam. One of my biggest passions is art. Visiting theatres, watching movies, reading a book, going to exhibitions and many more are a big part of my deal free time. In order to have a full-Dutch experience, I am trying to learn Dutch…let’s see how it will go. Doei, doei allemaal!

Chiara Goldenstern (She/Her)

Chiara Goldenstern (She/Her)

Hi, my name is Chiara! I'm a first year Communication Science student and a photographer for YOUvA Today. I was born in Germany, but lived in the United States for most of my life. I love taking photos as it captures the world in such a beautiful way. When I don't have a camera in my hand, I'm most likely travelling, reading or trying to find my way around Amsterdam (I am notoriously bad at navigation, ask any of my friends). I have an unhealthy obsession with playing Wordle every morning, and I own two dogs!

Lea Borsboom (She/Her)

Lea Borsboom (She/Her)

Hi there! My name is Lea, and I'm a photographer at YOUvA Today. I study Communication Science. Ever since I got my camera, I have developed a love for taking pictures of sports, nature, and people or things that inspire me. Besides my passion for photography, I enjoy socializing with friends, going to festivals, and walking my Australian shepherds. I also have an affinity for extreme sports such as horse-back riding and surfing. If you want to exchange ideas or photos, please feel free to reach out to me!
