A virtual exhibition at CREA

Thanks to the creativity of CREA’s team, we can still enjoy all of the artworks and performances that we were unable to see in person following the last block of courses. The virtual open house offers the chance to cleverly navigate the hallways of CREA through your laptop and indulge in the artistic expressions of fellow students.

A visit to studio 2.04 takes you to Henny van Grol’s drawing and modelling class. Students have clearly had a lot of fun expressing themselves through clay with the human form being a popular motif (with the exception of some bell-peppers or pumpkins in the mix). Some of the small sculptures invoke a dramatic scene, whereas others give off a more melancholic air. But what really prevails from the work is a definitive sense of self-expression and joyfulness in taking on a new art medium.

Moving on through the hallways, studio 2.06 is bursting with colours and vivid images as you enter the fine art studios of Marjan Verkerk’s model drawing and painting, which proudly displays the vibrant interpretations of the human face, using bold colours to accurately depict every line of emotion that appears in one’s expression. It is clear that a lot of time and attention was paid to the study of both the role of colour and the importance of capturing inherent humanness in each subject. The collection from across the class is a beautiful insight into what happens in the fine arts classes and in the wider CREA.

A personal favourite is the photography department. A wide range of images from striking contrast images, to intimate portraiture are on display in the CREA photography department. It is obvious that students of the numerous photography courses have been given free rein to explore whatever style of photography sparks their interest and the result is a fascinating collection of photographs that explore everything from the damp greyness of an urban football court to the intricate design of a textile. The photography department also offers the opportunity to vote in this block’s photo competition with the theme ‘light in darkness’. The nominees have all interpreted the theme in their own unique way and it has produced a fascinating collection of shots from portraiture to nature.
