YOUVOTE 2022: Poor communication as key issue at the Science Faculty

YOUVOTE 2022: Poor communication as key issue at the Science Faculty

Ready to rumble? The elections have started! You have until the 20th of May to vote for the Central Student Council and for a Faculty Council.

At the Faculty of Science, three parties are running: LIEF, SLAAFS and De Vrije Student. We spoke to three candidates, who told us all about their plans if they are elected.

Damian Piersma (LIEF)

If you had to summarize your party in a few words, what would they be?

Inclusive with a heart for students.

What are the most important issues for your party?

The most important issues are flexibility, inclusivity and transparency. Everybody should feel at home at the FNWI. A way to do this, is, for example, to create a service desk for international students.

What are the most important issues at the FNWI?

Transparency, for example, regarding grades that are published too late. That is one of the biggest issues at our faculty. Of course, it shouldn’t be the case that grades a published late in the first place, but if that were to happen, clear communication is crucial.

If you could change one thing at the UvA, what would it be?

I would change the communication of the UvA, as it is often not on time or vague. Take for example the closure of buildings during the storm a few months ago, a lot of students only knew this on the day itself.

How will motivate students to vote, especially given the low voter percentage in the previous years?

Last year we were in lockdown, obviously, so no one was on the campus itself. This year that is thankfully not the case, so this will give a boost of votes, I think. We also want a more proactive stance toward voters. So going up to them to have a chat.

Amber Cornelissen (SLAAFS)

If you had to summarize your party in a few words, what would they be?

Eerlijk simpel bier (Fair simple beer)

What are the most important issues for your party?

Our party’s major point is free beer for the students. Besides that our candidates all focus on their own issues

What are the most important issues at the FNWI?

Important issues I believe are social safety, diversity and communication between the university and students. I believe that these bigger societal issues deserve more attention by making actual policies on top of just raising awareness.

If you could change one thing at the UvA, what would it be?

I would make food for students more available by lowering prices since the current prices are not student-friendly

How will motivate students to vote, especially given the low voter percentage in the previous years?

We will be giving out free beer to incentivize students and try to make clear how important the student council is since many people are not aware of the influence they have

Winson Ooi (De Vrije Student)

If you had to summarize your party in a few words, what would they be?

It is in our name, so free mainly. But also pragmatism, rationalism and individual freedom.

What are the most important issues for your party?

Quality of education is the most important issue. So practically, this would mean extra study spaces. But also flex studying, this means paying per point.

What are the most important issues at the FNWI?

There are a lot of Dutch courses on the faculty so issues such as internationalising education are less of a problem here, but we currently really focus on recording our lectures. But also being able to hear about feedback for courses from previous years.

If you could change one thing at the UvA, what would it be?

At Science Park people often have class until late in the evening, so I would really want to vouch for more space, so there is enough room and people have classes during working hours.

How will motivate students to vote, especially given the low voter percentage in the previous years?

I talk to my friends and classmates, but this is my first year running so I don’t know exactly why it is that low, but more engagement on social media should also help.
