An international guide to kindsday

The first thing you do when you are accepted by the UvA is to check which days you have off, right? Then you might know that King's Day is a big thing in the Netherlands. The meaning of this holiday (and the endless sea of orange) can be quite confusing, and let's be honest, daunting. If you are not aware of King’s Day and you want to know more about it. Here is a guide for the Day dedicated to the King, my international folks!

CREA: dare to dance!

CREA: dare to dance!

Whether you’re the kind of person who lunges for the nearest table as soon as the beat drops, the kind of person whose wildest dance routine consists of a few timid head bobs, or anyone in between, sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and watch the professionals do all the hard work. True, the dance crew at Saturday’s show may not be professionals -yet- but how did their performance hold up for a half-hour of almost non-stop dancing?

Amsterdam’s alternative nightlife

For those of us for whom weekly borrels and nights in Disco Dolly don’t quite cut it, there is a plethora of underground and alternative nightlife and culture for students seeking everything outside of the ordinary. Whether it be live music, 12-hour raves or even arts and cinema, there is plenty going on.

Internationalising the lunch table at the University of Amsterdam

I had never spent much time at the Roeterseiland campus until my classes started taking place there during my last academic year. One day, I decided to grab some lunch at the campus cafeteria in building E. I was met with a wide assortment of foods, ranging from vegan and vegetarian to meat- or fish-based options. But, that wasn't the main thing that stood out to me. It was the number of international food options it offered — meals from Pakistan, Lebanon, Vietnam and Mexico. The colours of the different country flags painted the scene of the cafeteria so beautifully.

Meet Mick, who raised 2600 euros for Ukraine

Mick, an employer at Universitair Sportcentrum (USC), walked 60.7 kilometres from Amsterdam to the International Court of Human Justice in The Hague in solidarity with Ukrainian refugees. Mick did not actually go to The Hague though, he completed the walk on a USC treadmill. With this, Mick raised 2600 euros for the charity organisation Giro 555.

Party lights and dark themes mark STA’s new play

When was the last time you genuinely answered the question: how are you? Most of the time, a simple good is fine, right? So do we truly communicate with each other? Student and director Kelly Heijmans was wondering this exact thing. As a result, the play Hoe Gaat Het? (How are you) was created and performed by the Student Association for Theatre (STA).

#JokesOnUni: Why are our tutors striking?

On April 1st, whoever passed by the Maagdenhuis, would notice that approximately 100 people were gathered in front of the building to demonstrate our future as junior lecturers. Who were they? Our junior lecturers. What were they doing? ‘Defending our tutoring rights’, a member of the organizational committee Casual UvA explained. What are they requesting and how does this strike influence our university life, my fellow students? We talked to two tutors and Casual UvA to get some answers!

A classic mistake: Awareness and plurality

A classic mistake: Awareness and plurality

On March 26th, CREA hosted Classic Meets Jazz, a concert by the Amsterdam Student Big Band (ASBB). What makes a classic a classic? What makes music classical? When did jazz unmeet classical music? And most importantly, who decided what is considered a classic? These are not just questions that have shaped history, but rather, sentences lurking in the silence of music culture. In the case of a jazz big band, rarely there is space for silence. However, the silence in Classic meets Jazz was the lack of representation of the very unrooted roots of this genre: the convergence of plenty of different cultures with the desire to speak up against racial discrimination.
