UvA students meet Malaysian LGBTQ+ activist

This Tuesday, the 21st of June, UvA students had the opportunity to meet Malaysian LGBTQ+ activist Numan Afifi. UvA Pride invited Mr. Afifi to share his experience with attendees of the event and promote his work on LGBTQ+ activism in Malaysia. Mr. Afifi informed students about the foundation and run of the organization JEJAKA (young man), advocating gay, bisexual and queer rights in Malaysia and generally the struggle of the LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elections in the making at UvA:  on 16th May, in the light of the Central Student Council Elections (16th-20th May), the leading candidates of the parties presented their vision and their agenda with regard to the university changes. The Law Student Council (Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid, FdR) represents the department of Law and PPLE (Politics, Psychology, Law, Economics). The Council of the Faculty is distributed as follows: 12 seats divided into 8 Law students and 4 PPLE ones. On April 1st, whoever passed by the Maagdenhuis, would notice that approximately 100 people were gathered in front of the building to demonstrate our future as junior lecturers. Who were they? Our junior lecturers. What were they doing? ‘Defending our tutoring rights’, a member of the organizational committee Casual UvA explained. What are they requesting and how does this strike influence our university life, my fellow students? We talked to two tutors and Casual UvA to get some answers!
