Unpacking the Wolfpack

In 2010 five teenagers look at the world outside their apartment for the very first time. Almost their entire lives up to had been spent confined within a three-bedroom New York apartment. A few years later the world will get to look back at them through "The Wolfpack", a documentary that recounts the incredible and disturbing story. This weekend at CREA cafe theatre group STA attempted to tell their story once again, only this time live and onstage.

CREA: dare to dance!

Whether you’re the kind of person who lunges for the nearest table as soon as the beat drops, the kind of person whose wildest dance routine consists of a few timid head bobs, or anyone in between, sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and watch the professionals do all the hard work. True, the dance crew at Saturday’s show may not be professionals -yet- but how did their performance hold up for a half-hour of almost non-stop dancing?

Amsterdam’s alternative nightlife

For those of us for whom weekly borrels and nights in Disco Dolly don’t quite cut it, there is a plethora of underground and alternative nightlife and culture for students seeking everything outside of the ordinary. Whether it be live music, 12-hour raves or even arts and cinema, there is plenty going on.

Party lights and dark themes mark STA’s new play

When was the last time you genuinely answered the question: how are you? Most of the time, a simple good is fine, right? So do we truly communicate with each other? Student and director Kelly Heijmans was wondering this exact thing. As a result, the play Hoe Gaat Het? (How are you) was created and performed by the Student Association for Theatre (STA).

Making Noise at Science Park

While the UvA is certainly no stranger to creativity, it might surprise you to discover that one of the newest art installations on campus was recently set up at Science Park. “The Noise Gap”, a sound art installation that aims to highlight the issue of gender discrimination in academia will be set up until the 14th of April for anyone who would like to visit. On the 5th of April, we attended the opening ceremony for the project to find out more about this unconventional and extremely relevant piece of art.

Behind the scenes of ‘Come from Away’

What does it take to create an award-winning musical, and what does it take to stage that musical in an entirely new language with an entirely new vision? These were the questions that the creators and crew of “Come from Away” attempted to answer during a two-part talk hosted by the UvA’s musical theatre chair at the DeLaMar theatre the afternoon before the very first performance took place on the 25th of March.

Easylaughs lives up to its name!

What is student life without at least one obligatory improv show? While Amsterdam seems to be full to bursting with any number of comedy nights, stand-up shows, and cabarets, international students might have some issues trying to satisfy this unwritten collegial requirement. Luckily, however, for those of us who haven’t mastered the Dutch language yet, CREA cafe will be hosting English improv comedy shows every Friday until the end of April. The question is: are they worth it? These are my impressions after attending the 18th of March Level 1 class showcase.

Today’s Artists: ‘I love my Matisse Boys’

Rose Bedel describes her drawings as fantastical, simplistic and a little childish. If you look close enough (without becoming creepy) you might spot them throughout Amsterdam, because her work can be found on numerous people’s skin! The 21-year-old psychology student has made a business of tattooing people and does so with joy!

A virtual exhibition at CREA

Thanks to the creativity of CREA’s team, we can still enjoy all of the artworks and performances that we were unable to see in person following the last block of courses. The virtual open house offers the chance to cleverly navigate the hallways of CREA through your laptop and indulge in the artistic expressions of fellow students.
